Yangcheng Lake

About three kilometers northeast of the City of Suzhou, the Yangcheng Lake is a freshwater lake and is well known with one of its aquatic produces – Da Zha Xie, a Chinese mitten crab. .

The lake lies between Lake Taihu and the Yangtze River and borders with three county-level cities under Suzhou’s jurisdiction: Changshu, Kunshan, and Wuxian. The surface area of the lake is about 20 square kilometers. .

In its history, the lake was involved in a story of the traditional Peking Opera, “Sha Jia Bang” (Sha Family’s Creek), where the creek is the birthplace for the legend. This was a legendary tale and was edited into the opera during the Cultural Revolution Period. As the lack of sources of entertainments in the period of time, the opera became at that time so famous that everybody watched many times for fun.

Another thing made the lake well-known is its aquatic produce, the Chinese mitten crab – a hairy animal. The crabs migrate from Yangcheng Lake towards the Yangtze River Delta for mating in September and October. The local fishermen harvest the crab and sell them as a delicacy in market. By statistics, the total production of the crab in 2002 reached about 1,500 tones. .
