General Information
Xiangshui, or noisy water in Chinese, is a county under the jurisdiction of Yancheng Prefecture city. The county' name was givin during the Qing Dynasty due to the loud noises yielded by tidal bores of the Guanhe River, which could be heard miles away. The tidal bores are generated when rushing tides from the sea crash with river currents, causing furious torrents and terrible smashing sounds.

As an agricultural land with the uncontaminated environment, Xiangshui is a place that still owns a well shaped ecosystem. Stunning local residents over years, tens of whales from the Yellow Sea had swum back into its watergate as deep as 10 km. Covered by abundance of an aquatic plant species, shallow water lotus, the county is honored as a “Town of Shallow Water Lotus”.


Geography, Resources and Climate
Xiangshui County is located at the junction of three prefecture cities, Yancheng, Huai’an and Lianyungang. On its northern territory, the Guanhe River, an inner river of Jiangsu, flows through from west to east until running into the East China Sea. The county owns 43 km of the coastal line, facing Japan and Korea by crossing the sea.

Principal natural resources include its marine area and marshland. The county is currently the largest site for sea salt production in China.

The county has an oceanic monsoon climate with humid changeable wind and distinct four seasons. The average temperature is 14°C with the hottest 38.7°C in July and the coldest -17°C in January. The raining season is from the middle of June to July and the average annual precipitation is 1,000 mm. There are 209 days free of frost.


Administration and Jurisdiction
Xiangshui County has a jurisdiction over 12 towns and townships and a provincial agricultural development district. Its municipal government is stationed in the Town of Xiangshui. The post code is 320921 and telephone area code is 0515.


Area and Population
The county occupies a land of 1,378 square kilometers, plus a marine area of 1,600 square kilometers. The population is over half million.


Economy, Industry and Environment
Xiangshui was a traditional salt-making site but now it is an important agricultural land. The agricultural income occupies 30% of the county revenue. Principal agricultural products include rice, cotton, fruit, livestock and vegetable. In addition, aquatic production has earned the county a national reputation with more than 200 sea food products including fish, crab, shrimp, etc.

The county’s industrial sectors are still in its early shape, including textile, chemicals, machinery, food manufacture, pharmaceutical, etc.

Xiangshui is a land where the industrialization has not yet caused a major damage to its environment. The local municipal government has spent significant funds in protection of ecosystem, including water resource, rivers, etc. The authority of the port makes tough rules to guide its construction. More trees have been planted and the marshland is in recovering.


Transportation and Tourism
Xiangshui’ road transportation mainly relies on G204, S306, Jinghu (Beijing-Shanghai) Expressway and the Jiangsu Coastline Expressway, in which G204 and S306 run through the county from east to west but Jinghu and Coastline Expressway go the north-south direction.

Its water transportation relies on two major rivers, the Tongyu Canal and Guanhe River. Chengjiagang Port, located at the mouth of Guanhe rive, opens to international cargo transportation. The port is 36 km (23 miles) away from Lianyungang Port.

The urban core of the county is 70 km and 100 km away from Linyungang and Yancheng Airports, respectively.

Tourist destinations include Kaixin Island, Chengjiagang Port and Guanhe. Kaixin Island is a beautiful island located in the mouth of Guanhe River, which is about a hectare in size with 36.4 m high over sea level. Chengjiagang Town, dubbed “A Pearl in Yellow Sea”, is one of Jiangsu 100 Famed Towns. The town is at the mouth of Guanhe River. From there, you would have a choice to see whales, swum back into the river from the sea, and surrounding historical relics.


Education
Xiangshui has 88 primary, secondary and high schools in total. The city has well instituted compulsory primary education system. The secondary and high schools education achieve significant graduate rate. The city has three vocational schools.


Culture and Folklore
In ancient time, this land, which was called Xiangshui later, was only a site for salt-making. A historical relics, called the Ancient Yunti Pass, was built in the Song-Yuan Dynasties.


Notable Personage
Cheng Weida (1916-1990), is a native of Xiangshui, and was the formal Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party in Tianjin City.
