General Information
When googling “Suining”, you would distinguish there are two Suining, both are county-level cities but in different provinces of China, one is in Sichuan Province, the other Suining is a county under the jurisdiction of Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province.

Suining, with a history more than 4,000 years of human civilization, was once an ancient town with thriving economy, obsessive Buddhism dominance and booming population during the period from the Song to the Qing dynasties. Located at the upper northwest corner on provincial map, the land was first entitled as an ancient coounty jurisdiction and named Xiapi in the Xia Dynasty (2070-1600 B.C.). Starting from the Song Dynasty, this land became a war zone and countless combats took place on the land from the Three Kingdom Period to the Sino-Japanese War, which destroyed most historical relics but fortunately left many new legends behind. In Chinese history book, a powerful earthquake, magnitude 8.5, struck the ancient town in 1668 A.D. And only about 20 days later, a devastated levee broken of the Yellow River hit the town harder and buried it under the flood.

Either natural disasters or human conflicts has never destroyed Suining's heart and soul. Proud of its distinguished child education, the county is now the city with an international reputation in children’s drawings with more than a thousand of medals or honors already awarded or entitled.

Geography, Resources and Climate
Suining borders Suqian on the east, Pizhou and Tongshan on the north, and Anhui Province on the west and south. There is a hilly area in its eastern territory with more than 100 peaks.

The county has a low elevation over sea level. It is a water-resource-abundance city and is crisscrossed by many rivers, reservoirs and lakes. The most critical body of water is the Grand Canal.

Principal natural resources include minerals including marble, quartz, phosphorus, lime, etc. The county experiences a mild climate with distinct seasons, and its springs and autumns are short while the summers last very long. Annual average temperature is 14°C. Precipitation is lower than the average level of its neighbors, only 800-900 mm annually, and 210 days free of frost.

Administration and Jurisdiction
Suining is under the jurisdiction of Xuzhou City and it is comprised of 16 towns and townships. The municipal government is stationed in the Town of Suicheng. The post code is 221200 and telephone area code is 0516.

Area and Population
Suining has a physical land mass of 1,773 square kilometers and has a population of 1.23 million.

Economy, Industry and Environment
Suining was traditionally considered as an agricultural land. Although its soil is not fertile but the moderate rainfall and warm weather make the county one of Jiangsu’s agricultural areas. Though the earning of agriculture shrinks over years, the agricultural earned income is still a major portion of the city’s revenue. Major agricultural products include rice, wheat, corn, cotton, livestock, oil seed, vegetables, fruits and medical herbs. Breeding of Germany Boer goat has become a major sector both in research or meat industry.

Massive plantation of an Italian populus, a tree species, brings the county an opportunity to form its forest industry and protect its environment. Other industrial sectors include auto manufacture, textile, IT, new materials, etc. Suining Economic Development Zone has been recognized as one of the provincial industrial parks in 2006.

Suining’s environment is still in a good shape and the local government has spent significant funds over years to protect its ecosystem. Many investment projects have been required to reduce their greenhouse gas emission and contamination.

Transportation and Tourism
Suining is only 80 km away from Xuzhou, which is a national transportation hub in China. There are at least 2 highway/expressway, G104 and Nanjing-Suqian-Xuzhou Expressway, running through the county from east to west direction, connecting other three expressways, Jinghu Expressway (Beijing-Shanghai), Jingfu Expressway (Beijing-Fuzhou) and Lianhu Expressway (Lianyungang-Xinjiang). By driving, you spend 50 min to reach Xuzhou, 3 hrs for Nanjing, 1.5 hrs for the Lainyungang Port. The Xuzhu Guanyin Airport is located in the territory of Suining. Via Xuhong River, the county is connected to the Grand Canal, providing the county a convenient water transportation.

Suining is one of tourist destinations for its enriched culture and historical relics. The earliest pagoda in China, erected in 193 A.D., was once splendid but was destroyed in the wars between the Song and Jin dynasties. Now you can only see the relics of the pagoda.

The best tourist locations include the Yangshan Temple, or Goat Temple, a prestigious Buddhist temple with a history of hundreds of years. Unfortunately, the temple was mostly demolished during the Sino-Japanese war. And again, during the Cultural Revolution the unnecessary mining was almost destroyed the rest of the temple.
