General Information
Rudong County, a county under the jurisdiction of Nantong, is located in the east coast of Jiangsu and has a coastline of 92 kilometers.

Dubbed a "Pearl of Southern East Sea", Rudong is a land formed by the enoumous sand deposit brought by the Yangtze River in a history of more than 2,000 years. The Rudong Yangkou Port would be one of the most prestigious seaports in the East China Sea in the coming decade.


Geography, Resources and Climate
Rudong is located in the east coast of Jiangsu and the north part of Yangtze River Delta. It borders Rugao in the west, Hai’an in the northwest and Tongzhou in the south. The county flanks the East China Sea on its east.

Rudong is located in the northern Jiangsu Plain and its eastern territory continues expanding because the new land keeps forming due to the deposit of sands that Yangtze River has been bringing year after year. Yangkou Port is an ocean-orientated deep water port and has been designated as a potential major port in the eastern coast of China in the coming years.

The county has a humid subtropical climate influenced by oceanic wind and has distinct four seasons. The annual average temperature is 15ºC and has an abundant precipitation annually. As a coast city, Rudong has enormous area of beaches and wetland and an oceanic surface of more than 17,000 hectares.


Administration and Jurisdiction
Rudong county is under the jurisdiction of Nantong and is made up of 15 towns and a provincial economic development zone.


Area and Population
Rudong has a land mass of 1,872 square kilometers and oceanic surface area of 17,000 hectares. Its population is over a million.


Economy, Industry and Environment
Rudong is considered a coastal county in Jiangsu, which has a plenty of fishery and oceanic surface area, combined with its agricultural sector. Its important agricultural produces include cotton, rice, cocoon, corona oil, etc. Sufficient supplies and produces of sea foods and veges harvested from oceanic water and its shadow beaches have given the county a remarkable wealth.

The economic expansion over years has added numerous new sectors to the county’s industry, including texture, biomedical, mechanic and electronic industries. The fishing industry relies on the East China Sea and even wider Pacific Ocean. The fast development of Yangkou Port would further enhance the county’s oceanic transportation capability. The city has been ranked at 86th on the list of China’s Top 100 Counties (county-level cities) for its comprehensive economic strength.

Rudong has established two industrial zones, Rudong Economic Development Zone and Yangkou Port Development Zone, to attract more investment funding. The Rudong Yangkou Port is becoming the most prestigious port in the East China Sea in the recent years. In 2007 Singapore RGM International signed an agreement with the city to invest $1.33 billion USD in total for a renovation project for the port.

Rudong environment is still in a good shape as its limited industrialization has not yet caused obvious ecological damage. The local municipal government has been putting stiff environmental rules into practice over years and has spent substantial funds to protect its environment. The city has been honored as one of the green cities in China.


Transportation and Tourism
Transportation was not worth to brag years ago for Rudong. However, the historical situation would soon be terminated upon the completion of Haiqi (Haimen-Qidong) Expressway and Tongru (Nantong-Rudong) Expressway. Sutong (Suzhou-Nantong) Yangtze River Bridge already opened in April 2008. The county has connected with its neighbors by five provincial highways including G221, G222, G223, G226 and G334. The distance from the urban area to Nantong Xingdong Airport needs only half hour by driving. Yangkou Port provides the valuable waterway for cargo transportation.

In the urban area of the city, the public transit, plus taxi and buses, provides convenience to the city’s commuters.

Tourist attractions include many tourist destinations with well-balanced natural scenic regions in Rudong. It is a good place to enjoy clean air and ecological environment.


Education
Rudong has well instituted nine-year compulsory education system for youths and its high schools including junior and senior high schools achieve a significant graduation rate. The prestigious educational institutions include Rudong High School, Rudong Experimental Elementary School and the First Vocational High School.


Culture and Folklore
“Disco on the sea” is a local attraction, which is derived from a local fishery farming in shadow sea water. In order to capture a kind of shellfishes in the shadow water, the local fishermen have to step heavily on sand on the sea beach. After certain time of tramples, the shellfishes appear to the surface of sand so that fishermen could capture them. This local fishing practice has become a tourist attraction and many of them come to the fishery farm to entertain that looks like dancing.


Notable Personage
Jinhua Li, the Auditor General of Centre Government of China, was born and had his early life and education in Rudong. Li graduated from Financial Department of the Central Economic and Financial College in 1966. He was the Vice Auditor General of the State Council from 1985 to 1998 and the Auditor General from 1998 to 2003. He was highly respected by his citizens for his dignity, honor and straightforward.
