General Information
Jinhu, denoting “Golden Lake” in Chinese, is a county under the jurisdiction of Huian’an Prefecture City, with a history similar to most of its neighbors.

The county name was first given in 1959, in which the name was adopted and modified from a lake, Jinguang Lake that is originated in the county. There is no any so-called Gold Rush stories related to the name. The county is located in the North Jiangsu Plain.

Geography, Resources and Climate
Jinhu County is located in the North of Jiangsu and it borders Baoying and Gaoyou on the east, Xuyi and Hongze cities on the west, and Tianchang city of Anhui province on the south.

Like its most neighbors, Jinhu is crisscrossed by numerous major bodies of water, including three lakes, Baima Lake (Writer House Lake), Baiying Lake and Hongze Lake. Two rivers, Sanhe and Huai, run through its hinterland. Its total water surface area occupies one third of the land, e.g. 420 square kilometers in 1400 square kilometers, plus abundant wetlands.

Except crude oid, there is no major natural resource available.

The county has a subtropical monsoon climate with humid changeable wind and the average temperature is 15°C with the hottest 35°C in July and the coldest -9°C in January. The raining season is from the middle of June to July and the annual precipitation is close to 1,100 mm.

Administration and Jurisdiction
Jinhu County is under the jurisdiction of Huai’an. The city is comprised of 11 towns. In the history, Jinhu was divided and governed by Baoying and Gaoyou, but became an independent county only in 1959. The municipal government is stationed in the Town of Licheng.

Area and Population
Jinhu has a land mass of 1,393 square kilometers, including 420 square kilometers as the water surface area, occupying one third of total area. The county has a population of less than half million.

Economy, Industry and Environment
Jinhu, traditionally, replied on its agricultural and aquatic incomes, and its abundant water resources offer the county additional revenues as well in over thousands of year of the history. The aquatic produces consists of fish, crab, shellfish, shrimp, and “aquatic vegetable” including lotus rhizome and seed, caltrop, etc. The agricultural income occupies one third of the county's total GDP.

The economic expansion over past 10 years has enhances the city’s economy, but its industrial sectors are still in an early shape.

Principal nature resource mainly includes plentiful crude oil to provide the county the valuble revenue. In addition, three huge lakes provide Jinhu abundant aquatic products.

Jinhu’s environment and ecosystem are well under protected, specifically for its water resources as the county is still in its initial stage of industrialization. No major contamination has been made from its industrial sectors. The city is making efforts to maintain its ecological environment specifically in protection of its water resource.

Transportation and Tourism
Nanjing-Lianyungang Expressway runs through the county from south to north to make Nanjing and Jinhu within a handy two-hour-driving distance. Abundant water resources bring the county a convenient water transportation advantage.

In the inner city, the public transportation system including bus, taxi and cargo transport, long distance buses to near cities or towns, provides convenience to the city’s commuters and visitors.

Jinhu has numberous tourist attranctions including historical sites, parks and temples. The most attractive sites for tourists include Gaoyou Lake, Sanhe Scenic Region, and more.

Jinhu has well instituted compulsory primary education system and the secondary schools including high schools achieves significant graduate rate. No higher learning institution is available in the county.

Culture and Folklore
Jinhu has a few folklore including special band using traditional local music instruments. A festival, Jinhu Lotus Art Festival, is held in the county each year.
