General Information
Located in the north of Jiangsu province, Jianhu is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Yancheng whcih is one of thirteen prefecture-level cities of Jiangsu Province. The county, meaning “Build a Lake” in Chinese, has actually neither any lakes being constructed nor any lake within its territory. Two Chinese characters, "Jian" and "Hu" used in the name, are only presented an adoption from the names of two of its towns, Jianyang and Hudo.

Local residents are fascinaing its folk art traditions, acrobatics and Huai Opera, and this city has been honored as “Town of Acrobatics” and “Town of Huai Opera” as well.

Geography, Resources and Climate
Under the jurisdiction of Yancheng, Jianhu County is located in the north of Jiangsu, the Jiangsu North Plain. The county borders Sheyang, Funing, Yancheng and Baoying.

The average elevation is only two meters over sea level and there are totally about 3,000 rivers or irrigating canals crisscrossing the county. The water surface area occupies 20% of the county’s land.

Jianhu has a maritime monsoon climate, with distinct four seasons. The annual average temperature is 15ºC around with 25ºC in the summer and 4ºC in the winter. The annual precipitation is close to 960 mm. The so-called Mei Yu season, meaning “humid and rainfall abundant” in Chinese, is short, lasting about two to three weeks.

Administration and Jurisdiction
Jianhu County is under the jurisdiction of Yancheng. The county is comprised of fifteen towns and one economic development zone. The municipal government is stationed in the Town of Jinhu.

Area and Population
Jianhu has a physical land size of 1,154 square kilometers and the water surface area occupies 20% of its land size. The county’s population is 800,000. The urban residents occupy one fourth of the total population.

Economy, Industry and Environment
Jianhu is basically an agricultural land and its agricultural income is the primary earning for the county. The major farming and aquatic products include rice, cotton, vegetable, fish and more. The total agricultural earning occupies about 30% of the county’s GDP.

Jianhu industrial sectors are not fascinating. However, after twenty years of development, the county has become a leader in energy-saving lighting manufacturing, and an industry cluster has taken shape over years.

Pollution caused from industries are still limited. The city is making its effort to maintain its ecological environment and forest. The facilities and regulations have been set up in chemical-manufacture zones and industrial areas to protect environment and water resources.

Transportation and Tourism
Jianhu is linked to its neighbors and remote provices by two major tranport systems: waterway and road transportation system. The national highway G204 and the Huaijiang Highway (a section of Beijing-Shanghai Highway, starting from Xuzhou to Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge) run through the county from north to south. Xinying-Changxin (a city of Zhejiang province) Railway runs southwards through the county. There is 40 min of driving distance to the Yancheng Airport. Juanhu's waterway provides an access to the East China Sea.

In the inner city, the public transportation including bus, taxi and cargo transport, long distance buses to near cities or towns, provides convenience to the city’s commuters and visitors.

Jianhu has numerous tourist attranctions including historical sites, parks and temples. The most attractive sites for tourists include Qiao Guanhua memorial house, Menglong Pagoda, Jiulongkou Scenic Region (also called the Nine-dragons Scenic Region), Xitang River, and more.

Jianhu has well instituted compulsory primary education system. The secondary schools including high schools achieves significant graduate rate. It has two vocational high schools with the provincial prestige. The adult vocational education system has brought diverse programs to its labor forces.

Culture and Folklore
A local opera, Huai Opera, was originated in Jianhu and it was popular during 1920s-50s in the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Shanghai and even Taiwan. Over years the opera has diminished steadily but still enjoys a share of entertainment market in local theatres.

Acrobatics is a well-known and popular performing art in the region and Jianhu is one of three origins for the traditional displays. Many acrobats initially became more recognized by audiences and funs. Among them, outstanding acrobats are been employed in famous acrobatic theatres and are frequently dispatched to other countries as a cultural ambassadors.

Notable Personage
Lu Xiuhu (1236-1279) has been praise as a national hero for more than 700 years in Chinese history. Lu Xiuhu was one of the chancellors during the Song Dynasty. He sacrificed himself by jumping into sea with the youthful king of the Song Dynasty on his back in order to avoid capture by enemies. His tomb is still a scenic destination for tourists.

Qiao Guanhua (1913-1983), as a prominent professional diplomat in Chinese foreign affairs, was the former Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs for People’s Republic of China from 1974-1976. Born in Jianhu County, now under the jurisdiction of Yancheng City, Mr Qiao completed his graduate education in Germany with his Ph.D. degree. He was promoted to the post of the Foreign Affairs Minister in 1974, during the political unstable period – the Cultural Revolution. After the duration, his political privilege came to an end and he step down from the post. He later held the position of advisor for the Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries until he died in 1983. Qiao Guanhua birthplace is the memorial house for him.

By a claim of Jianhu County government web, Dr Taylor Gun-Jin Wang, a Chinese American and a Payload Specialist Astronaut, was born in Jianhu. In June of 1983, Dr. Wang was selected by NASA to train as an astronaut-scientist for Spacelab-3, a research facility flown in the cargo bay of the space shuttle. In 1985, Dr. Wang flew aboard the Challenger as part of a seven member crew on the successful STS-51 mission (April 29 - May 5). During the flight, Dr. Wang studied the dynamic behavior of rotating spheroids in zero gravity in an experimental facility which he designed called the Drop Dynamics Module (DDM).
