General Information
Gaochun is a county under the jurisdiction of Nanjing, which is the capital of Jiangsu Province, with a driving distance about two hours to Nanjing.

The county is famed with its civilization history that could track back to the New Stone Age about 6,300 years ago. Xi River, the oldest man-made canal in the world, was constructed before 484 B.C. by a well know chancellor, Wu Zixi, in the Spring and Autumn Warlord Period .


Geography, Resources and Climate
As a satellite city of Nanjing, Gaochun is one of the capital city's suburb area, bordering two neighbors, Lishui and Liyang counties, on the north and east, respectively, and Wuhu City of Anhui Province on the southwest. Gaochun does not directly border Nanjing metropolitan area.

Two lakes, Gucheng and Shijiu, are located in the county and Lake Shijiu is one of the largest ten lakes in Jiangsu. The surface area for Lake Gucheng is 35 square kilometers and it is located within the county's boundary. Shijiu Lake occupies an area of 196 square kilometers and is one of the eight scenic spots of Gaochun. The total water surface area occupies one third of the county's physical land mass.

With a close climate to Nanjing, the county is situated in a transit belt from the subtropical region to a warm temperate zone. It has a temperate climate and is under the influence of the East Asia Monsoon. The seasons are distinct with usually hot summer, mild winter, and plenty of precipitation throughout the year.


Administration and Jurisdiction
Gaochun County is under the jurisdiction of Nanjing. It is comprised of nine towns and 166 townships and villages. Wujiazui Village, the richest village in the county’s all townships, is under the jurisdiction of Gubai Town. The municipal government is stationed in the Town of Chunxi.


Area and Population
Gaochun County has a physical land mass of around 802 square kilometers, in which two thirds plus are the land and the third is water surface. Its population is around half million.


Economy, Industry and Environment
Traditionally, Gaochun heavily depended on its agriculture income and its primary farm products included oil seed, rice, vegetable and aquatic products. Livestock breeding is now an important research and industrial sector for the county, which produces near half million of pigs, a quarter million of goats and 4.5 million of poultries. As a supplier of agricultural and aquatic products for Nanjing, Gaochun plays a crucial role in endorsing the capital with diverse foods, fruits and vegetables.

Wujiazui Village, the richest township in Gaochun, is under the jurisdiction of Gubai Town. Wujiazui has been honored as the richest village not just in all villages of Gaochun but also all villages under the Nanjing jurisdiction. The primary income for the village comes from its shipping business and it has earned an asset of 6 millions Yuan ($ 0.8 million USD) for each household in the village.

Increased population and decrease rural land provide Gaochun an opportunity to develop its construction sector. Now the revenue from the industry has reached one third of the county’ total income and the sector offers dozens of thousands of jobs to traditional farmers. Nanjing is an important labor market for Gaochun.

The county has been honored for its environment protection and eco-system, the only county for the national ecosystem title in Nanjing. The local government has banned and shut down many environment-contaminating factories along its lake shores industrial district in order to protect the water resources. It intends to turn out to be a green-food producer in Jiangsu.

Gaochun has recently received its significant enhancement for its economy, setting up more industrial sectors and economic development zones, specifically, for its ship-making industry. It is sincerely hoped that the impact of the industrialization will not harm its environment.


Transportation and Tourism
Gaochun is connected to its neighbors by Nanjing-Gaochun Expressway and other highways. Its waterway links the city to Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Shanghai, etc. It has a driving distance of 56 km to Nanjing Lukou Airport, 98 km to Nanjing Port, 87 km to Nanjing urban core, and 60 km to Wuhu downtown. With a radius of 150 km, Gaochun can reach the cities: Zhenjiang, Changzhou and Wuxi and with radius of 200 km the county can reach cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou and Hefei.

In the inner city, the public transportation including bus, taxi and cargo transport, buses to near cities or towns, provides convenience to commuters even if the system still needs a major improvement.

For tourist attraction, Gaochun has eight most famous sites, called "Gaochun Eight Scenes". The Hairy Crab Festival attracts many eaters and travelers each year.


Education
Gaochun has well instituted compulsory primary education system. The secondary schools including high schools achieves significant graduate rate.


Culture and Folklore
Laojie Street, meaning “Old Street”, is one of spectacular tourist destinations in the county. The street has a history of more than 500 years and is now expanded into a walking street designed for tourist attraction, with dozens of amazing resident houses, restaurants, museums and entertainment shops.

The restaurant Liuchaojiu, meaning “Six Dynasty House”, is located on the Old Street of the city town with a hundred-years history. It is a restaurant serving local Huaiyang dishes with its best known banquets using fishes, melons and Chinese Tofu.

Gaochun Folklore Museum is located on the Old Street (114 Laojie Street, Guachun, Nanjing, Jiangsu) and is a place to meet local cultures.


Notable Personage
Cheng Yi, a well-known army Marshal and the first minister of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the State Council of People’ Republic of China, lived in Gaochun when he was the commander of a resistance force in China’s Anti-Japanese war in 1938. His temporary headquarter was set in an ancient building, the Wu Ancestral Hall. This hall is now under the protection of the provincial government as a historical relic.
