General Information
Baoying is a beautiful county of Jiangsu Province and is located in the central part of the province. The county has been under the jurisdiction of Yangzhou Prefecture City since 1953.

Baoying used as a name of an ancient township started in 762 A.D. in the Tang Dynisty and has not been changed since then in more than a millennium even through its jurisdiction did change many times. The county now has a population close a million and owns 16 towns and townships.

Best known as the "Land of Lotus", Baoying exports numerous exquisite traditional lotus products, derived from the plant's seed, flower to root, to its neighbors and foreign countries such as Singapore, Japan and Korea.

Geography, Resources and Climate
Located in the Jiangsu North Plain, Baoying County borders cities of Jianhu, Yancheng and Xinghua on the east, Gaoyou on the south, Jinhu and Hongze on the west.

The Grand Canal runs through the county territory, dividing Baoying into two halves. The elevation is low, only about 2 meters in average over sea level.

Water resource is abundant and the water surface area is close 20% of its land mass, in which there are totally 42 rivers and 9 lakes in the county's territory, including Lake Baoying and Lake Beima. The abundant aquatic products earns the town a national reputation, The Town of Lotus.

Baoying spans subtropical climate and moderate rainfall, and has clear-cut seasonal changes, with temperatures at an average of -2 to -6 C in winter and 20-30C in summer.

Administration and Jurisdiction
Baoying is a county-level county under the jurisdiction of Yangzhou City. It owns over 16 towns and townships. The county municipal government is stationed in the Town of Anyi, a historical town.

Area and Population
The county has a land mass of 1,467 square kilometers and has a population close a million.

Economy, Industry and Environment
The county is an acknowledged agriculture land and its traditional farm products include rice, oil seed, wheat, cotton and vegetable, etc. Aquatic products are prominent, especially for production of lotus, which is a remarkable business for the county's agriculture sector and has gained a popularity nationwide. In addition, the county is well known for its production of medical herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Industrial sectors are with a fast developing pace and they greatly improve the city's economy. Baoying has established six development districts to attract national and international investment funding.

To protect its environment and agriculture areas, Baoying has spent valuable funds on its water and land and has since then became a model city for environment protection in China. Now opening to the outside world, Baoying welcomes all visitors across the planet and all kinds of investment, business and enterprise.

Transportation and Tourism
Jinghu (Beijing-Shanghai) Expressway runs through the city from north to south, but Jinyan (Jinhu-Yancheng) Highway goes from west to east. The Grand Canal is the principal waterway transportation for the county.

The most important tourist attractions include Babao Pavilion, built in 1551 A.D the Ming Dynisty. The pavilion was actually destroyed in civil wars but rebuilt in 1983 based its original design.

Zongzhuo Garden, a private garden famous in the Qing Dynasty, was demolished during the Sino-Japanese war and later was used as a local high school. In 1958, the garden was renovated as a public park and was restored its old name in 1982.

Baoying has an extensive primary education system covering municipal and rural areas. The secondary schools including high schools achieve significant graduate rate. There is no higher learning institution in Baoying.

Culture and Folklore
Most customs of the county are similar with its neighbors including Yangzhou, Gaoyou. Its water cultures and traditions are prominent.

Notable Personage
Liu Baonan (1791-1855) was the ancient town's mayor at his time. He was born in Baoying and published many books in aspects of politics and arts in the Qing Dynasty.
