Jiangsu's municipal subway systems

E-mail Print

Jiangsu has four cities that own their subway systems, calling metro rail network, but these systems have not been completed.

The Nanjing Metro has three lines: Line 1, 2 and 3, operated by the Nanjing Metro Company and more lines are under planning. Line 1 opened to public in September 2005 after five years of construction. In 2010, the south extension of Line 1 and the new metro Line 2 became available. Line 2 was designed to provide service of 500,000 passengers a day.  More are under construction now. Still remembering in 2010 there were a lot of construction sites on streets around its downtown Xinjiekou arer. Totally Nanjing currently has 85km of metro rail network, with plans to increase this to a couple of hundred km by 2030.

China's new public washroom standarts

E-mail Print

Want a job on your resume that'll raise eyebrows? Apply to become a "stink assessor" for China's notoriously noxious public washrooms.

Applicants for such a position should be younger than 30, have no history of nasal disease and avoid tobacco, pungent food and drink before and during the assessment, the country's ministry of health announced this week.

The new rules - issued Thursday for public feedback before they are revised and enforced later this year - also specify the number of flies permitted: three per square meter in a stand-alone bathroom and just one per square meter in a bathroom inside another building. As for maggots - zero tolerance.

China's air pollution at danger levels

E-mail Print

Air pollution smog

Cold weather, lack of wind and a dearth of environmental regulations have lately created a storm of toxic smog in northern China including Beijing, the capital of the country. Air pollution levels have shrouded Beijing in smog for the second time in about two weeks, forcing airlines to cancel and residents have been warned staying indoors as much as possible as the pollution was "very bad".

The outlines of buildings in Beijing receded into a white mist as pedestrians donned face masks to guard against the thick, caustic air. The US embassy reported a level of PM2.5, one of the worst pollutants, at 526 micrograms per cubic metre, or "beyond index", and more than 20 times higher than World Health Organization safety levels over a 24-hour period.
