I utilize whatever resources that are available to me such as buying/borrowing/renting books and CDs. I read, listen, and speak repeatedly. I watch TV programs (not the news - too difficult) and try to get the flavour of the language. Sometimes I just mimmick as I watch. When I am within earshot distance of a dialogue/conversation, I try to listen and learn no matter where I am: at the supermarket, in the restaurant, or standing at a bus stop. I learn what I can, when I can, and however I can. Of course there were times when I was trying too hard and couldn't get anywhere; in such case, I would take a breather and then get back to it after a day or two. Sometimes the language I am learning will come to me because I know I have absorbed the information. I just have to tab into it.

Sorry to hear about your plight. I can only suggest that you try to focus on the tones. Can you hear the four tones distinctively (five, if you count the neutral tone)? I used to have a hard time hearing the third, hence, could not mimick it for the longest time. I am embarrassed to admit that it took me almost a year to get all the tones pat down.
